A little cold weather, and yes, even some fluffy, white snow for Christmas is always nice, but once the new year has gotten underway, for gardeners it's time to start dreaming and planning for the spring growing season.
If this sounds like you, check your calendar for January 28, the last Saturday in January, for University of Illinois Extension's Mid-Winter Horticulture Workshop. This Saturday morning workshop is sponsored by Extension Master Gardeners in Rock Island, Henry, and Stark counties at the First Lutheran Church, across from the park on the square, in Geneseo at 114 East Main Street.
The program will begin at 8:30 a.m. with registration, plus rolls, juice, fruit, & coffee.
Starting promptly at 9 a.m., presentations include:
"Midas Touch" Think beyond green in your landscape, presented by Martha Smith, University of Illinois Horticulture Educator, Add a splash of gold to create a focal spot or create a color accent. Recent plant introductions offer a variety of yellow/gold foliaged plants. You can add gold with evergreens, trees, shrubs, groundcovers and perennials. Find out how you can add the Midas Touch to your garden.
The Language of Flowers, presented by Rhonda Ferree, University of Illinois Horticulture Educator Should you send a red or white rose to the one you love? What gift of flowers best expresses thanks to a friend? Through the ages, various flowers and floral arrangements have taken on subtle and secret messages that allow us to express our unspoken feelings. Rhonda Ferree from University of Illinois Extension will teach you how to send the most appropriate floral message this Valentine's Day.
Gardener's Hand Cream Make and Take Winter weather leaving your hands dried and cracked? Then you'll especially enjoy this make a take session where you'll create a hand-made cream that will leave your hands feeling happy and refreshed.
Registration for the program is $15 per person and must be made by Thursday, January 26.
