CAMBRIDGE—School board members and administrators got a bit of a shock two weeks ago. While looking over some of the geothermal project which is nearing completion, they discovered a black substance on the ceiling above some of the drop ceilings in some of the classrooms at the Cambridge Elementary School and decided to find out what it was. After sending off a sample to Emlabs, it came back as black mold.
CAMBRIDGE—School registration will be held from Monday, Aug. 9, through Wednesday, Aug. 11. Teacher institute will be Monday, Aug. 16, and the first day of school on Tuesday, Aug. 17.
CAMBRIDGE—Geothermal rooftop units were put in place Tuesday, July 20, at Cambridge Elementary School. The project should be completed by Friday, July 30, said Superintendent Tom Akers. “The well fields are almost ready and they are hoping to run a water test Thursday, July 22,” he stated. “There may be some little comestic things that need to be finished after July 30, but otherwise we should be good.”
CAMBRIDGE—Pre-kindergarten will be retained as a full-time program at the Cambridge Elementary School since Illinois will reportedly increase funding for early childhood education, according to Tom Akers, superintendent of schools. The announcement was made during the Cambridge School Board meeting Wednesday, July 14.
CAMBRIDGE—To promote health and fitness at the Cambridge Elementary School, Carrie Titus, community health educator with the Henry County Health Department, put on a program called Extreme Super Steppers. This program became very successful during the year with 14 students walking over 400 miles during the school year. As a school 35,422.75 miles were walked.
CAMBRIDGE—Gail Hutchinson of rural Geneseo retired from the Cambridge School district after teaching for 37 years. “I have enjoyed teaching,” she said. “Every day is different and it is such a good feeling when a student finally succeeds. I hope I made each child’s day the best possible day.”
CAMBRIDGE—Principal Shelly Logston told the Cambridge school board that the end of the year went very smoothly at the elementary school. “The kids got a little restless, but some fun water activities in gym class the last week of school helped get the kids outside and run some of their energy out,” she said at the regular meeting on Monday, June 21. “They really enjoyed gym class and it was a great way for them to cool down.”
CAMRIDGE—Mary Ghys of Geneseo taught 25 years in Cambridge before retiring at the end of the school year. “I have loved teaching,” said Ghys. “The best rewards has been watching the ‘light bulb’ go on and seeing former students succeed in life. I love to see and talk to former students.”
CAMBRIDGE—The Cambridge school board approved the 2009-10 amended budget during their regular school board meeting Monday, June 21, at the Cambridge Elementary School.
CAMBRIDGE—School superintendent Tom Akers told school board members that Cambridge High School’s Honors Night Thursday, May 13, was once again a success. During his report at the meeting on Thursday, May 20, Akers thanked everyone who helped with Honors Night for all their hard work. Akers also talked about a successful Jazz Night, the FCCLA Banquet Baccalaureate, which 33 attended on Sunday, May 16, at Cambridge United Methodist Church. The board approved 39 seniors who met requirements for graduation on Saturday, May 22.
CAMBRIDGE—Henry and Stark County Health Department announces that it has received a special grant that will allow them to conduct several free immunization clinics throughout the area.
BISHOP HILL—Fourth graders from Cambridge Elementary School spend Thursday, April 29, learning how people accomplished their daily tasks when they did not have electricity or gas engines.
