School board learns end-of-school programs successful

    School superintendent Tom Akers told school board members that Cambridge High School’s Honors Night Thursday, May 13, was once again a success.

    During his report at the meeting on Thursday, May 20, Akers thanked everyone who helped with Honors Night for all their hard work.

    Akers also talked about a successful Jazz Night, the FCCLA Banquet Baccalaureate, which 33 attended on Sunday, May 16, at Cambridge United Methodist Church.

    The board approved 39 seniors who met requirements for graduation on Saturday, May 22.

    He talked about the team-building workshop for the freshman class at Loud Thunder, Andalusia, and announced the junior high honors assembly would be held Tuesday, June 1.

    Akers talked about a new summer reading program for junior high students..

    The board also learned the high school surveyed seniors about to graduate. More than 40 percent plan to attend a four-year college; almost 40 percent, a two-year college; and about 9 percent, a trade school. About 4 percent are undecided and about 3 percent will enter the armed forces.

    Akers talked said the CHS band and chorus finished 11th among 78 schools their size at state contests.

    The superintendent reported that the new gym lighting, occupancy sensors and new freezer are already saving the district some money.

    “We had the average winter so this had to be what helped us out,” he stated. “We have saved between $6,000 and $8,000 since October 2009.”

    The board also:

    • Accepted the retirement notification from Marsha Storm for the 2014-15 school year.

    • Approved a six-month contract for gasoline/diesel fuel from GoldStar FS at $244.1 for regular unleaded and $2.61.6 for diesel, which is under last year’s bid.

    • Approved the contract with Sara Lee for bread for the 20-11-12 school year atthe same rate as this year.

    • Approved co-oping boys and girls track with AlWood School District for 2011-12.

    • Hired Dylan Eldridge of Emmetsburg, Iowa, a 2010 graduate of the University of South Dakota, as the high school teacher. Eldridge is also interested in coaching in the future.

    • Approved Nate Skelton as a volunteer football coach.

    • Hired Lana McDonough as the new part-time prekindergarten teacher. Wynne Legate is moving up to kindergarten. The board is also looking into the option of relocating Lana’s Little School to the elementary school to assist parents who children do not qualify for the prekindergarten program.

    • Moved the next school board meeting until Monday, June 21, with the budget meeting slated for 6:45 p.m. and the school board meeting at 7 p.m.
