Cambridge native VanDyke retires from Whiteside County sheriff's department

Cambridge native Larry VanDyke recently retired from his post as chief deputy of the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Department.

VanDyke has spent more than 40 years in law enforcement. His uncle was a former police chief in Cambridge and inspired VanDyke’s career choice.

After graduating from Cambridge High School in 1968, VanDyke earned an associates degree from Danville Junior College.

While working on his degree, VanDyke worked as a Henry County Deputy Sheriff from 1969 to 1970.

From 1970 to 1972, he served as an Army Military Policeman stationed in Arizona. He then served with the Cambridge Police Department from 1972 to 1974 before accepting a position with the Prophetstown Police Department.

In 1975, he was appointed chief of that city’s department and served in that role for 15 years.

In 1990, VanDyke joined the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Department as chief deputy.

As chief deputy, VanDyke said his role included scheduling and staff assignments, in addition to a range of other duties.

He’s served as a CPR and Automated Eternal Defibrillator instructor as well as a firearms range instructor.

He served on the Northern Illinois Criminal Justice Committee, the Whiteside County Counter-Terrorism Committee and the Family Waiting Committee.

VanDyke has been a member of the Prophetstown Ambulance Service since 1976 and a certified EMT since 1980.

VanDyke is the son of Donna VanDyke of Geneseo and the late Robert VanDyke.

He and his wife, Lynda, have two adult children, son Eric and daughter Angela.
