Last week was a very exciting time for the Troy Schnowske family.

They spent Monday, July 25, through Friday, July 29, in DuQuoin, watching their son, Kash, compete in the 36th Annual AMA Racing Dirt Track Grand Championships.

Kash was named the National Grand Champion overall for age seven to eight, with a 50cc bike.

“It was a very exciting time for us, but also a very stressful experience,” said Sarah Schnowske. “Kash was racing with the best of the best and they were from all over. We complained about the 5 1/2- hour car ride and then we heard people talking about driving for days to arrive at the races.”

There were families from just about everywheres including New Hampshire, Oregon, Pennsylvania and New York according to Sarah.

“On the short track race, Kash placed second,” according to Sarah. “He had some mechanical problems.”

The mechanical problems were evidently fixed because from there out, Kash finished first. Troy is the mechanic with Kash working right beside him.

He won the T-T track with includes jumps and won two different days on the 1/2-mile track.

“Kash was named National Grand Champion because he earned more points at the week-long event than any other individual who competed in the 7 to 8 year old division with a 50cc bike,” said Sarah.

“I love racing,” said Kash. “I think flat track racing is easier than motorcross racing. I love going fast and sliding around the corners.”

Sarah said Kash usually drives around 70 miles per hour during the half-mile race.

Kash has been motorcross racing since he was three years old and last year after an invitation from Reid Janson started flat track racing.

His season started April 10 and will finish around Sept. 25.

“Last year we raced almost every weekend, this year, we are enjoying the season and not worrying about being there every weekend,” Sarah said. “Kash wanted to play baseball with his friends this summer and enjoy some other activities.”

He competes on dirt tracks in Pekin, Macomb and Galesburg.

Kash has been invited to an awards ceremony in Las Vegas, Nev., where he will be recognized along with a lot of other riders. There will also be a number of professions on hand.

Kash is sponsored by Rebel Gears and “Getto Racing” out of Wataga.

His grandparents, Larry and Norine Schnowske, were on hand to watch him throughout the week too.
