Why did you decide to get involved with public safety?
Growing up I saw local law enforcement helping people in crisis during winter storms, fires and motor vehicle accidents. There was a Henry County deputy, a state trooper or city police officer handling the situation and helping people. I was drawn to that.
Who inspired you and how?
When I was 16, I met an investigator with the Illinois State Police, Gary Degelman. Special Agent Degelman simply talked to me about his job and experiences and it sparked my interest in law enforcement.
What are the greatest challenges in your field?
The caseload can be challenging to manage. Dealing with people at their worst or going through the worst times of their lives can be tough. This job tends to make you see the workload from a unique perspective.
What advice can you offer for someone who wants to go into public safety?
People judge others by the content of their character and their past. Law enforcement agencies looking at perspective employees do the same.
Stay out of trouble and stay focused on positive goals.
What’s something about your line of work that most people don’t know?
I think most people would be really shocked by the crazy things that go on in our “quiet county”. Thanks to my job I get a front row seat to it.
What is a memorable moment in your career and why?
It’s really difficult to pick just one. Serving high risk search warrants while I was assigned to our drug unit (surprising people at their home while they are doing things they shouldn't be doing). You see some interesting things and memorable behavior.
