Dana Brock took a pie in the face to raise funds for the Henry County Fair, now she's preparing to face off in Springfield against 69 other queens for the 2012 Miss Illinois County Fair state crown.

Brock, 18, of Cambridge, was crowned Miss Henry County Fair last June, also winning interview, evening gown and swimsuit awards.

During a fund-raiser for the fair last September, she offered to let the highest bidder throw a cream pie in her face. The winning bid came from Lindsey Patton, Miss Henry County Fair in 2007 — the same year Brock was Junior Miss Henry County Fair.

Brock will be competing for the state crown Jan. 20-22 at the Crowne Plaza, in Springfield. The state pageant, which includes 70 girls this year, is held in conjunction with the annual convention of county fairs, the Illinois Association of Agricultural Fairs (IAAF).

Brock is the daughter of Tom and Sandy Brock and a 2011 graduate of Cambridge High School. She is a freshman at the University of Illinois majoring in broadcast journalism.

She has also become active in several campus organizations including New Life Volunteering Society, Alpha Phi Soririty, and a member of the executive board of the Ikenberry Commons residence hall complex.

Her speech will be about an author who has been her favorite from childhood — Dr.  Suess — using quotes from his books to illustrate how they have influenced her life.

At Cambridge High School, Dana was student council president, editor of the yearbook, vice president of the National Art Honor Society, was inducted into the National Honor Society and was a member of the dance team and Scholastic Bowl team.

Candidates will meet with the judges Friday, Jan. 20, for one-on-one interviews and are divided into two groups — afternoon and evening — for semi-finals Saturday.

The 70 girls are lined up for competition by height with the tallest in the middle and shortest on each end. Brock is number 50, landing her in the evening portion of the competition in which each girl is judged on a one-minute speech and models in evening gown and swimsuit.

The finals will be held Sunday (Jan. 22) evening as part of the IAAF banquet.

The program will open with a dance number performed by the 70 county fair queens after which the girls receiving the top 15 scores will be announced and judged once again in speech, evening gown and swimsuit, as well as response to on-stage questions.

The winner will be crowned by 2011 Miss Illinois County Fair Jackie Driscoll, the 2010 Miss Henry County Fair, now a student at Monmouth College.

The new state queen will visit fairs and pageant around the state and be the official hostess of the 2012 Illinois State Fair, in Springfield, as well as the DuQuoin State Fair.
