Why did you decide to get involved with public safety?
I have always been a believer in being active in the community and this was a great opportunity to help out the community I live in.
Who inspired you and how?
I had a friend that was a firefighter and it seemed like a great thing to do to help out our community.
What are the greatest challenges in your field?
Learning how to operate the tools and machinery we use. I am not the handiest guy around and I’ve had to learn alot. The other firefighters have been such good teachers.
What advice can you offer for someone who wants to go into public safety?
Make sure you have your family behind you before you become involved. It is a time commitment and I’m lucky I have my wife and kid’s support.
What’s something about your line of work that most people don’t know?
I’m the tallest in the department. I am also a substitute ambulance driver.
What is a memorable moment in your career and why?
Being with the Cambridge grade school kids during fire prevention week and wearing the gear to show them not to be afraid of firefighters even though we may look scary. This is memorable because of the looks on the student’s faces before and after I took the mask off. Becoming superintendent of schools in Cambridge I have learned so much and work with and for some of the best people I have known in education.
