Spartan girls advance to state tournament

The Ridgewood Spartans will play in the semifinals at the state girls basketball tournament on Friday, Feb. 26, at Redbird Arena, Normal.

Third-ranked Ridgewood defeated ninth-ranked Colfax Ridgeview 70-58 in the super-sectional game on Monday, Feb. 22, at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington.

Ridgeview, which finished third at state last year, had a 24-23 lead at halftime. But the Spartans took over the game with a 19-2 run in the third quarter.

The Spartans improved to 31-2 in their first year as a co-op team.

High scorers for the Spartans were Amanda Kruger, 20; Ella Teel, 11; Jena Peterson and Danyelle English, nine each; Michelle Williams, 8; Annie Gelaude, 7, and Stephanie Williams, 6.

At 2 p.m. Friday, Ridgewood will play Hinckley-Big Rock, a 57-31 winner over Stockton in the Elgin super-sectional at Judson University on Monday night.

Ranked second in the state, Hinckley-Big Rock is the defending state champion.

On Saturday, Feb. 27, the third-place game will be at 12:15 p.m. and the championship game at 2 p.m.
