Obituary: Marvin Medley

    Marvin J. Medley, 92, of Woodhull died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2011, at his daughter’s home in Cambridge. 

    Services were 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 27, at the Peterson-Wallin-Knox Funeral Home in Woodhull.  Burial was in the Woodhull Cemetery where military rites were conducted.  Visitation was 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 26, at Peterson-Wallin-Knox. 

    Memorials may be made to Pathway Hospice of Trinity Medical Center or United Church of Woodhull.  

    Marvin was born on August 26, 1919, in rural Cambridge, a son of James and Flossie Cowden Medley.  He attended Cambridge schools and married Jeannette L. Steffen March 17, 1947, in Geneseo. 

    He was a U.S. Army veteran who served under General George S. Patton.  He received the Purple Heart and one Silver Battle Star and fought in Normandy, the Ardennes, the Rhineland and other central European battles.

    He farmed for 18 years and then was employed at John Deere Plow Planter in Moline, retiring in 1984. 

    He was a member of the former Clover Chapel Church and a current member of the United Church of Woodhull and the Miles S. Sturgeon American Legion Post 546. 

    He enjoyed country and western music and was an avid bicyclist until his late 80s, participating in “Ride the River” and many other cycling events.

    He is survived by his wife, Jeannette; four daughters, Patricia (Ron) Six of Ft. Meyers, Fla., Sally (Randall “Tom”) Shaw of Guin, Ala., Cynthia (Jon) Milroy of Cambridge and Peggy Blakley of Crossville, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.
