Curtis M. Edmund, 89, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Cambridge, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital in New Braunfels, Texas, while on vacation.
Cremation has been accorded and a memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 12, 2010, at the Cambridge Chapel of Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services with the Rev. John Eisfelder officiating. Inurnment services will follow at Rosedale Cemetery, Cambridge, with military services by Moline American Legion Post 246. There is no visitation.
Memorials may be made to the Cambridge United Methodist Church.
Curtis Merle Edmund was born Feb. 24, 1920, in Woodhull, the son of John and Inez (Johnson) Edmund. He was educated in Alpha and Cambridge schools. His marriage to Mary Anderson took place on June 14, 1941, in Winchester, Tenn. She died Dec. 3, 2004.
He served in the U. S. Army during World War II and was mistakenly reported as killed in action on Nov. 7, 1944, in Belgium. He was actually wounded and taken to a prisoner of war camp in Germany. Curtis was awarded the Bronze Star and the Silver Star for his heroic service in combat in Europe. Curtis went back to Normandy in 1994 to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the invasion and was given the Commemoration Medal for his participation in that invasion.
After the war, the couple settled in Cambridge where he owned and operated the Edmund Grocery Store until selling it and moving to Arizona in 1970. Curtis then worked for Arizona State University in Tempe in the maintenance department for ten years.
He was a member of the Mesa American Legion Post 26 and a former member of the Cambridge United Methodist Church. Curtis loved to travel, was very interested in history, and was an avid reader.
Those surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Steve Pyevich, Hampton; a son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Judy Edmund, Mesa, Ariz; nine grandchildren, Adam and Abby Edmund, Amy Edmund Hernandez, Steven, Brian, and Thomas Pyevich, Amanda, Angie, and Matthew Edmund. Other survivors include ten great-grandchildren and two brothers and sisters-in-law, John Jr. and Susie Edmund, Alpha and Franklin and Marlene Edmund, Stockton.
His parents, his wife, a son, John, and five brothers preceded him in death.
