Obituary: Dorothy Murphy

    Dorothy A. Murphy, 90, of Bettendorf, Iowa, died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011, at the Bettendorf Health Care Center.

      Per her request, cremation rites were accorded. A memorial service was held Saturday, Oct. 8, at 11:30 a.m. at The Runge Mortuary.  Visitation was Saturday morning at the mortuary, from 9:30 until the start of the service. 

    Memorials may be made to March of Dimes or Hospice Compassus.

    Dorothy was born Sept. 2, 1921, in Armstrong, Iowa, the daughter of Irvin and Sadie (Hackerson) Stewart.  She was united in marriage to Hubert Olson in 1941 in Missouri; he preceded her in death in 1966.  She married Lawrence “Murph” Murphy on April 5, 1971, in Rock Island; he preceded her in death on March 19, 2007.

    Dorothy farmed with her husband in the Cambridge, area.  Following her husband’s passing, she worked at Swan’s Drug Store and the bowling alley in Cambridge; she then moved to East Moline.  She worked at Walgreens in Moline for several years and then worked at Moline Consumers until she retired.

    Dorothy loved to bake, entertain friends and family, garden and read books.  She always cared deeply for the welfare of others.  Her greatest joy was her family.

    Survivors include her children:  Joann (Gary) Munson, Moline; Barbara (Tom) Nelson, Bettendorf and Pat (Mary Ann) Murphy, Surprise, Ariz.; grandchildren:  Paula (Brian) Modglin, St. Charles, Mo; Christine (Kurt) Zimmerman, Davenport; Abby Souder, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Denise (Jeff) Seykora, New Market, Mn; Kristin Murphy, Lonsdale, Mn; Jenny (Jeff) DeWitte, Coralville, Iowa and Jeff (Rhonda) Nelson, Bettendorf; great grandchildren:  Carla (Tom) Aubry; Kaitlin and Cameron Zimmerman; Matthew, Sam, Owen, Brooke, Justin and Jillian Seykora; Angela, Jonathan and Joey Friendshuh; Rebecca, Mitchell and Mason DeWitte and Jacob and Logan Nelson, and several nieces and nephews.

    She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Lloyd and Floyd.
