Obituary: Gretchen Lewis

    Gretchen “Gertie” Lewis, 84, Loves Park, passed away Thursday, June 10, 2010, at home surrounded by family.

    Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 16, at Riverside Community Church, Machesney Park,  with the Rev. Bobby Sheets officiating. Visitation was held at the church on Tuesday, June 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. before the service. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

    In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family for a memorial dedicated in her name to Riverside Community Church.

    She was born on March 3, 1926, in Geneseo to Fred and Bernice Drescher and graduated from Geneseo High School. She married Virgil Lewis on December 20, 1947.

    Lewis was a member of VFW Woman's Auxillary and Riverside Community Church. She was also a senior volunteer at Maple Elementary School.

    The family would like to thank special friend, Jan Nimm and the Riverside Community Church family for all their friendship and support.

    Survivors include her children, daughter, Karon (Herb) Schrader of Loves Park; sons, Michael (Maridith) Lewis of Evans, Ga. and Patrick (Sherry) Lewis of Pecatonica; grandchildren and spouses, Lewis (Emily) Schrader, Jennifer Woodyard, Justine Lewis, Christine Lewis, Michelle Lewis, Ann Lewis; great-granddaughter, Isabel Woodyard and brother and sister-in-law, Clarence (Lauretta) Drescher.                

    She was preceeded in death  by husband of 50 years, Virgil; twin sons; a sister and three brothers.
