Mildred A. Sundberg, 95, of Geneseo died Friday, March 20, 2009, at Hammond-Henry Hospital Skilled Care Unit, Geneseo. Funeral services celebrating her life were held Monday, March 23, at Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo. The Rev. Dr. Arthur Bergren officiated.

Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo. Visitation was held Sunday, March 22, at the funeral home. 

Memorials may be made to the Old Settlers Association of Bishop Hill or G.E.E.E. (Geneseo Endowment for Excellence in Education).

She was born Sept. 7, 1913, in rural Bishop Hill, the daughter of Henry G. and Almeda (Arnquist) Olson. She received a bachelor’s degree in education from Augustana College, Rock Island. She married Howard L. Sundberg June 25, 1939, in rural Bishop Hill. He died Sept. 19, 1970. 

She had been employed as an elementary teacher for 34 years, 23 of them in Geneseo. 

She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Geneseo, and a past member of Women of the Moose, Columbian Club, Friends of the Library, Royal Neighbors, Geneseo Art League, and Old Settlers Association of Bishop Hill. She was past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star. 

She was the granddaughter of Mary Malmgren Olson, who was the first child born in the Bishop Hill Colony. She was very proud of her Swedish heritage and made several trips to Sweden.

Survivors include two daughters and spouses, Janet and Kevin Bishop of Harbor Springs, Minn., and Jean and Dan Combites of Orion; two grandsons and spouse, Andy and Diane Combites of New Brighton, Minn. and Tim Combites of Orion; a great-granddaughter, Taylor Combites, and a great-grandson, Elliot Combites.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and a sister.
