On behalf of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Northwest Henry County committee, I would like to say “Wow!” Henry County had 13 teams participate alongside more than 35 survivors and many caregivers. We raised more than $25,000 to help in the fight against cancer.
On Sunday, Oct. 9, I went to Subway to pick up some ice cream. I accidently left a little purse on the counter. The purse contained about $80, my credit card and other cards.
This is the letter that Henry County Board chairman Tim Wells sent to President Barack Obama. After Obama spoke at a town hall meeting in Alpha, Wells presented him with the letter and Warren Hadley’s hand-crafted wind turbine.
Later this morning, and this afternoon, President Barack Obama will make two visits to Henry County. The first of these will be in Atkinson and the second in Alpha, Illinois. The President’s staff are calling these meetings “Town Halls.”
The Henry County Soil and Water Conservation District would like all of you to support the gaming expansion, Senate Bill 744. We, as a district, understand this is a very controversial bill, but we need your support. There are many reasons to voice your support for SB744. Besides helping conservation programming this bill provides funding for other agricultural programs in Illinois.
I started my July 4th by running in the Galva Freedom Fest 5K. Being a “runner” (read as: a little twisted in the head), I especially enjoy races. By “race”, I mean running with a bunch of other crazy people, of whom many are faster than I am, and racing against my own finish times. Going into this 5K, my goal was to beat my own “PR” (or “personal record”…
On the weekend of June 4, Andover commemorated the sesquicentennial of the start of the great Civil War during our annual Colonial Days Festival. This event, in many ways, was on par with last year’s celebration of Andover’s 175th anniversary.
It's not too late to save the Andover post office, according to a former resident who still lives nearby.
Tuesday, May 10, the Republicans on the Henry County Board demonstrated that we listen to the will of the people and are supporters of smaller government and a redistricting process that is fair, transparent, and free of politically crooked lines and boundaries.
The Illinois Senate has a proposal before them to zero out the County Board match and Cook County Initiative. Needless to say, that would be devastating to our programs.
If it’s not broke, don’t fix it. I have always been a firm believer in this philosophy.
But, when it is broke, you have to fix it. We can all agree the State of Illinois is broke (in more ways than one), and it needs to be fixed. But how are the state legislators going to fix it, and who is going to suffer? Many social service providers such as Abilities Plus have experienced budget cuts and delayed payments by the state since 2009.
The Henry County Board currently is examining the configuration of the voting districts used to elect members to the board. The primary purpose of reapportionment is to correct a population imbalance between districts that may have occurred due to population shifts since the last census.
On April 30th, Rebuilding Together of Geneseo/Cambridge will host its 17th Rebuilding Day. More than 100 volunteers are needed to rehabilitate five homes in Geneseo and one home in Cambridge. All of the work completed on these homes is free of charge to the homeowner.
CAMBRIDGE— Much to tell, much to do, scurry, scurry! The directors have been meeting every Sunday. The Henry County Fair is shaping up nicely. Grandstand shows are going to be super this year. The board made a huge decision to charge for the grandstand this year. There will be one charge for the whole day. Kids 8 and under of course are free. Now I know some of you don’t like this but it’s necessary to be able to put on good shows.
The Andover Historical Society was organized in 1968 for the purpose of preserving the rich history of the pioneering, hard-working Swedish immigrants who came to the “new” country, the United States of America, for a chance to realize their dreams and ambitions.
I feel as if I'm becoming a feature writer for the Chronicle. A letter to the editor two weeks in a row! It's taking a bit longer to write this one, as I am typing while simultaneously giving a standing ovation and a high five. First, the standing ovation; this past Saturday the Ridgewood dance team performed their lyrical dance routine at the State Dance Finals in Champaign. Our team brought home the second place trophy, missing a tie for first place by the narrowest of margins.
CAMBRIDGE—Back in the day, I attended grade school in Mt. Vernon. My school was a K-8 school, so we didn't really have a separate Junior High. During the nine years I attended that school, none of our teams, no individual or our music department ever made it to a state competition. If you think about the numbers, that is nine classes for nine years or eighty-one classes that never made it to state. I know that my school wasn't that bad, it's just an example of how many students never get to perform at the state level
CAMBRIDGE— I want to thank coach Jeff Hannam for always believing in me…I would not have accomplished 1,000-plus points without his guidance. We have all heard some not-so-nice comments about the coach, but we need to realize that, if we would all look at the concept of a co-op, it is seldom that you reap immediate benefits and success, but to develop a foundation.
CAMBRIDGE—During the first week of February, Henry County and many areas of the country experienced a dangerous winter weather storm of blizzard status. While none of us enjoyed the inconvenience of this storm, we were blessed in numerous ways and survived with minimal damage and no loss of life.
CAMBRIDGE—Jesus is the reason for the season! That is why the word "Christ" is in Christmas!
