The Cambridge High  School Mascot “Viking” slipped silently into the darkness in the final hours of the crisp cold evening Friday, Oct. 23, as the final buzzer for the Cambridge Vikings sounded at Oneida High School.
After the final game against the A&R Bulldogs the mighty Viking returned silently to the quiet stillness of Viking Stadium for the last time, looking back over the past 70 years knowing that his reign of triumph was over and that the dawn would ring in a new spirit for the fans of this community in the form of a Spartan.
Born in 1949, The Viking lead the way to 70 years of an outstanding athletics legacy in the Cambridge Community.
Many a game was won and lost not only in Football, but also basketball, wrestling, volleyball, track and baseball.
There were many playoff berths and State champions over the course of 70 years that included trips to state in wrestling, golf, basketball and track, and also an unexpected year in 2005 when the mighty Vikings traveled proudly to Champaign for a championship football game thWilsonat will forever be etched in the memories of the players, members and alumni of this community.
The mighty Viking stood tall and proud over the past 70 years, casting his shadow over those who dared to engage in the rigorous task of physical and mental preparation for what it would take to become a mighty Viking athlete.
He is forever in our hearts and memories.

“Sleep well o’ mighty Viking, for your work here is done.
You have seen many days and nights of battle, some lost and some won.
But now your battle is over, and your work here is through,
We will let you rest with great respect, while we trudge ahead to start anew.”

Glory to the Brave

“Lo, there do I see my Father,
Lo, there do I see my Mother,
And my sisters and brothers too,
Lo, there do I see the line of my people back to the beginning,
They do bid me to take my place among them
    In the Halls of Valhalla,
Where the Brave may live forever.”
