Indians win on Senior Day for softball team

Senior Day at Pontiac became more than just a recognition of two players on the softball team. Both of the seniors contributed how they could in a 10-0 win for the Indians over Lincoln Thursday at Williamson Field.
Madisyn Webster and Emma Jacobs were recognized before the game and recognizable during the contest as they scored five runs and drove in two between them.
“It’s great for them,” said PTHS head coach Nicole Hayner of Jacobs and Webster. “They have been part of the program, varsity starters, for the last four years; it’s a big loss. It’s hard to see them go.”
They aren’t leaving anytime soon. Pontiac will be hosting a regional in two weeks and is the favored team to take the title.
Hayner would like to see her team take that regional, giving Jacobs and Webster two more wins on the home field, in a similar fashion to Thursday’s drubbing of the Railsplitters.
Pontiac got the lead in the bottom of the first inning without the benefit of a base hit, and it was Webster who made the run possible.
“She’s been putting the ball in play very well and it’s all coming at the right time of the season,” Hayner said of her speedy senior centerfielder. “When she gets on, she’s going to find a way to score.”
Webster coaxed a walk to lead off the inning and stole second with Amanda Fox at the plate. Webster stole third with two outs and Jacobs at bat, setting up the possibility of scoring on a wild pitch or passed ball.
It was a wild pitch right after the steal of third. The pitch skipped to the backstop and Webster raced home, sliding in before Lincoln pitcher Kerstn Osbourne could receive the throw while covering the plate.
That really was all the Indians were going to need because starting hurler Regan Krause was not giving up much. Krause struck out the side in the first inning, and a string of seven straight punchouts from the second inning until she walked Osbourne with two outs in the fourth inning.
The walk spoiled the perfect game. A hit by pitch on Emily Paulus gave Lincoln its only scoring threat with Krause in the circle. A strikeout ended the fourth and Krause got two groundouts and a strikeout in the fifth.
Krause left the circle with 12 strikeouts and an 8-0 lead.
Pontiac got that lead by adding three runs in the third inning and four more in the fourth frame.
“We’ve been working on moving girls in the lineup to put hits in play,” Hayner said. “We’ve adjusted everything to where we would have a big hit to a bunt situation, or a hit in play behind them. It makes us more versatile.”
Maddi Stark doubled to left to get the ball rolling in the third inning for PTHS. Webster singled two batters later to drive in Stark, and moved into scoring position on Amanda Fox’s base hit. Addison Masching also singled when her high fly ball drifted away from the fielder in left. Webster scored on that play.
Alyssa Fox reached on an error that allowed Amanda Fox to score to make it 4-0.
The Tribe doubled the lead in the fourth with Stark acting as the instigator. She singled to lead off the inning and Madison Weber got the sacrifice bunt down to move Stark to second.
Webster bunted safely to put runners on the corners and Amanda Fox ripped a single to center that drove in Stark. Masching then cleared the bases with a bad-hop triple to right as Webster and Fox scored.
Jacobs grounded out to second but Masching came home to make it 8-0.
Amanda Fox was keeping the no-hitter going with two strikeouts of the first two batters she faced in the sixth. But a walk preceded a single from Osbourne that broke up the no-no.
The Indians ended the game in the bottom of the sixth. Webster, Amanda Fox and Masching each singled to open the frame. Webster scored on Masching base knock. Jacobs was intentionally walked to load the bases.
The plan worked for two batters as Alyssa Fox and Sydney Barnett each hit grounders to third that resulted in force outs at home. Krause brought the game to an end with a bounding single up the middle that scored Jacobs for the 10-0 win.
She’s become great at finding a way to get it done,” Hayner said of Jacobs.
Masching had a triple, two singles and four runs batted in for the Indians (17-7). Webster had three hits, a run batted in and four runs scored. Amanda Fox also had three hits and an RBI. Stark contributed a double and single and Krause had a hit and RBI. Barnett and Alyssa Fox each singled and Jacobs drove in a run.
