From the opening tip, it seemed that the Spartans were in control.  Taking possession of the tip, the Spartans moved the ball down the court Thursday, Dec. 3.

The first points of the game came on a three-point shot from the corner.

Abingdon responded with a three of their own, but then Ridgewood took over.  The Spartans scored the next seven points of the game, forcing the Abingdon coach to use his first time out of the game with 3:57 remaining in the first quarter.

Perhaps he should have saved that time out.  Even after the time out, the Ridgewood defense seemed to have the Abingdon team thoroughly confused.  The Spartans held Abingdon scoreless for the remainder of the first quarter, despite an attempt by Abingdon to beat the buzzer.  The shot seemed on line, but it clanged off the rim to end the quarter.  The score after one was 18-4 in favor of the Spartans.
