On Friday, May 21, the Ridgewood Spartans boys track team competed at the Farmington Track Sectional. Out of the 15 teams participating, the Ridgewood Spartans placed 11th with 12 points.
Matt Welch and Brandon Wilkinson participated in the 100-meter dash. Wilkinson had a time of 11.60 seconds, finishing ninth, whereas Welch was able to advance to finals with a time of 11.60 placing him in fifth.
Wilkinson along with Mikel Miller competed in the 200- meter dash. With a time of 23.50 in finals, Wilkinson placed fifth. Miller ran 25.00 which placed him 18th in preliminaries
Kyle Lookingbill, a junior of Cambridge High School, was the only Spartan to run the 400-meter dash. With a time of 56.10, Lookingbill placed ninth.
Two Spartans, Julian Trotman and Brandon Nelson competed in the 800-meter dash with a times of 2:17.50, 12th place, and 2:45.70, 27th place, respectively.
Both Trotman and Nelson led the Spartans in the next distance race of 1600 meters. Trotman finished 18th with a time of 5:19.90, while Nelson finished 23rd with a time of 6:07.30.
Joseph Shreeves, a junior of Cambridge, was the only Spartan to brave the 3200- meter run placing 19th with a time of 15:18.10.
In the 110-and 300-meter hurdles, Jared Swanson placed 14th and 18th, respectively with times of 18.70 and 49.00.
The 400-meter relay team of Eric Gates, Matt Spivey, Mikel Miller, and Elisha McCreary placed 15th with a time of 48.70.
Cody Lanning, Miller, Spivey, and Wilkinson ran the 800 meter relay with a time of 1:41.40 putting them in ninth place.
With a time of 3:42.30 the 1600-meter relay of Lanning, Miller, Spivey, and Welch placed seventh.
Finishing up the relays was Justin Fredrick, Ian Roden, Jonathan Timberlake, and Lookingbill in the 3200-meter relay placing ninth with a time of 10:53.70.
Looking at the field events, the Spartans had some strong competitors.
Kevin Miller placed sixth in the high jump clearing 5-9. Swanson tied for seventh with a jump of 5-7.
In the long jump, Miller placed sixth once again with a jump of 18-7. His teammate, Ryan McLaughlin placed 10th with a jump of 17-11 1/2.
With a hop, skip, and a leap, Lanning placed seventh in the triple jump with a jump of 38-3. In 13th was Welch with a jump of 35’6’’.
In the throws, Ben Smith took third place in the shot put with a heave of 46-7. Gates, a senior of Alwood, placed 16th with a throw of 37-1.
Smith also took seventh place in the discus with a toss of 118-11. His teammate, Trevor Kappelman placed 24th with a throw of 90-0.
