Cambridge varsity boys basketball team also had a busy week facing United and then Westmer in a tournament. In the end they came up with one win and one loss for the week.
United 57, Cambridge 50
Both teams played a good first quarter Friday, Jan. 30, at CHS. They seemed to play off of the others mistakes and that is how they scored. The two teams were a very equal match, and that is what made things very close in the first quarter. Cambridge was passing the ball, and many players were scoring, unlike United who had only a couple of scorers. Both strategies were different, but had the same effect. The quarter ended 15-14, with United having the one point lead.
The second quarter was not as good for the Vikings. They were still playing a good offense, but United was playing a good defense. It still stayed very close for most of the quarter, but at the end United began to pull away. United took the second quarter, but this time with a better lead 15-9.
After the half the Vikings got back in the game. They stayed close this time, and even pulled ahead of United. Daniel Walsh was the point leader for this quarter with six, and along with the rest of the team, they took the quarter 14-12. Still behind, but with time to recover.
The Vikings were only a few points behind, but United was not going to give up any more ground. They even pulled a little ahead of the Vikings, but it was still a race to the finish line. Both teams were real close and that was the bad part for the Vikings. They were not given the opportunity to pull ahead. United took the quarter 15-13, and won the game 57-50.

Cambridge 65, Westmer 52
Westmer started strong Saturday, Jan. 31, in the opening round of the Lincoln Trail Conference tournament, but in the end Cambridge won 65-52. Westmer came out with a very strong team that appeared able to easily overtake the Vikings. Even though it did start that way, it did not continue that way. Cambridge quickly caught up with the Warriors. Westmer did take the first quarter 19-13, but it was still only the beginning of the game.
Things went so much better in the second. The momentum that Westmer had, was gone, and the Vikings took that advantage. They pulled ahead of Westmer quickly, but before the quarter ended the Warriors retook some of their lost ground. The second quarter ended 17-14, with Cambridge still behind, but better than what they were after the opening quarter.
