Boys basketball awards presented

Three varsity basketball players took home all the awards following the annual basketball banquet Wednesday, March 18, at the Cambridge High School. They are, from left, Steven Lenertz, Tyler Nimrick and Daniel Walsh. Lenertz was the leading rebounder this year and Nimrick received the hard work award. Walsh led the team in scoring, had the most assists and the best free throw percentage.

 Coach Brent Vincent and coach Jeff Hannam came prepared to deliver speeches and talk about their amazing players and the season they had during the boys’ basketball banquet Wednesday, March, 18, at the Cambridge High School. 

 After the guests had their cake and refreshments, the ceremony began.

 Vincent spoke first, thanking the parents for their support, the school board, the athletic directors, Tom Akers, Gary and Deb Nimrick for doing stats, Kevin Walsh for doing the scorebook and Leanne Walsh and the cheerleaders for their support at the games.  

 After that, he began talking about all the players individually and gave their season statistics.

 Cody Anderson, shot percentage 12.7; off. reb. 14; def. reb. 17; assists 15; ft. percentage 33; avg. pts. 1.14. 

 Nathan Evans, shot percentage 11.7; off. reb. 8; def. reb. 14; assists 10; ft. percentage 25; avg. pts. .4. 

 C. J. Dekezel, shot percentage 23; off. reb. 20; def. reb. 30; assists 24; ft. percentage 33; avg. pts. 7.7. 

 Dustin Johnson, shot percentage 19; off. reb. 12; def. reb. 27; assists 15; ft. percentage 23; avg. pts. 2. 

 Nathan Mortensen, shot percentage 36; off. reb. 35; def. reb. 48; assists 33; ft. percentage 46l avg. pts. 8.9. 

 Ben Smith, shot percentage 39; off. reb. 74; def. reb. 98; assists 13; ft. percentage 44; avg. pts. 14.4. 

 Tyler Nimrick, shot percentage 52; off. reb. 17; def. reb. 38; assists 15; ft. percentage 63; avg. pts. 8.2.

 Before Vincent wrapped things up, awards were presented to the top junior varsity players. Ben Smith, a freshman center, won two awards, most points scored and most rebounds. Nimrick, a sophomore center, won an award for having the best free throw percentage and Dustin Johnson won the hustle award.

 He also had one last thank you which went to Jared Brandau for all of his help with the team throughout the season.

 Hannam started his part of the presentation with his own thanks to: Kevin Walsh for getting the team from place to place and keeping the scorebook, Leanne, the cheerleaders along with the dancers for boosting the team’s moral, the administration including Akers and Robert Reagan, Dawn Lewis, for all of her help, Don Hulin and Bruce Carlson for setting up and tearing down the gym, Cheryl Evert for all the things that she does, Shawn Walsh and Gary Nimrick for keeping stats, Cody Anderson for all his help, the parents for all the things they did, Brandau for all his work, coach Vincent, his wife for her support, and the players for their hard work and effort. 

 After going over some highlights of the season, Hannam talked about each of his players individually.

 He started with the players from the junior varsity team that had helped the varsity team throughout the year. They were: Smith, DeKezel, Mortenson and Nimrick who earned the hard work award for all of their efforts on the varsity team. Then he went into the varsity team and all of their accomplishments.

 Tyler Nimrick 6.8 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 59.5 ft. percentage.

 Clayton Carr 5.8 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 4.2 apg, 67.7 ft. percentage. Brandon Wilkinson 4.2 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 65.5 ft%.

 Devin Sheahan, (no stats given).

 Steven Lenertz 17.6 ppg, 8 rpg, 2 apg, 68 ft. percentage. 

 Daniel Walsh 19.4 ppg, 5.5 apg, 4.5 rpg, 3.2 spg, 82.4 ft percentage.

 Walsh earned three awards, most points, best free throw percentage and most assists. Lenertz took home the rebounder award and Nimrick earned the hard worker award.

 Hannam went into great detail about his two seniors, Lenertz and Daniel Walsh, since he had coached both since he started at Cambridge. 

 Walsh had 861 career points, 14th all time at Cambridge. He was also named to the first team all conference and honorable mention all state. 

 Lenertz had 919 career points, ninth all time at Cambridge and was named to the second team all conference. 

 Lenertz and Walsh were also named all conference academic along with Nimrick, Carr and Wilkinson. 

 At the end, the seniors presented Hannam with a basketball signed by the team and apppicture collage of the players.
