John William Evans, 77, of Erie, died Saturday, April 13, 2019, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, in Bettendorf, Iowa. A visitation was from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, April 18 at the Gibson-Bode Funeral Home, in Erie. A funeral service followed at 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Cremation took place after the service with burial at a later date in the Erie Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family.

John was born Aug. 17, 1941, in Cambridge, the son of Perry and Fern (Higgins) Evans. He married Joyce E. Wisdom on Sept. 4, 1960, in Geneseo. Over the years, John had been an owner/operator of his own truck, he worked in maintenance for Illini Beef and the former IBP, and he helped farm for some area farmers. In addition to all of that, he delivered papers for the Dispatch for more than 30 years.

John enjoyed watching John Wayne movies, NASCAR and was an avid Cubs fan. He looked forward to his afternoon meetings with his coffee klatch at the Pink Pony. Above all, he loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and cherished his dog, Chewy.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce; children, Mark Evans, of East Moline; Marty (Michelle) Evans, of Erie; and Shirley Jean Evans, of Hillsdale; brother, Arthur “Butch” (Sherri) Evans, of Ft. Mill, S.C.; sisters, Patricia Rohs and Phyllis Kraklow, both of Rapids City; 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Thomas Evans; and sister, Clara Buchannan.
