Michael Ray Chavez Sr., 69, of Geneseo, died Saturday, May 11, 2019, at his residence. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 17 at Vandemore Funeral Homes & Crematory, in Geneseo. Deacon Harley Chaffee will officiate. A visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, May 17 at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Maple City Cruisers or the Hammond-Henry Hospital Foundation.
Michael was born on Dec. 1, 1949, in Geneseo, the son of Ramone and Loretta (Plasschaert) Chavez. He married Margaret Nelson on July 18, 1969, at St. Pius Church, in Rock Island. Michael graduated from Geneseo High School in 1968. He was employed previously at Hedman & Anderson Lumber Yard, Payless Cashway and Lowes. He was a member of the Maple City Cruisers, Mustang Club of America, and St. Malachy Catholic Church. He enjoyed woodworking, attending car shows, loved his dog, Petie, and enjoyed walking him every day.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 49 years, Margaret; son, Michael (Mercy) Chavez Jr., of Geneseo; daughter, Meredith (Andrew) Holt, of Geneseo; grandchildren, Georgina Schmidt, of Mannheim, Germany; Kenny Chavez, of Galesburg; Justine Chavez, of Earlinger, Ky.; April Kelley-Chavez, of Geneseo; and Isabella Chavez, of Geneseo; great-grandchildren, Jadyn, of Mannheim, Germany; and Liam, of Earlinger, Ky.; mother, Loretta Chavez, of Geneseo; sisters, Linda (Roger) Mapes, of Cambridge; and Toni (Barry) Hunter, of Davenport, Iowa. Michael was preceded in death by his father.
