Francis Eugene “Gene” Girten, 75, of Geneseo, died Sunday, May 19, 2019, at his residence. A funeral mass to celebrate his life will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 24 at St. Malachy Catholic Church, in Geneseo. Fr. Michael Pakula will officiate. Cremation will be accorded following the mass and a private inturnment will be held at North Cemetery. A visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 23 at Vandemore Funeral Homes and Crematory, in Geneseo. Memorials may be directed to the Geneseo-Atkinson Food Pantry or the Henry County Humane Society - Geneseo.
He was born on March 26, 1944, in Princeton, the son of Charles and Margaret (Bickett) Girten. He married Mary Ann Rice on Feb. 14, 1970, in Geneseo. Gene was employed by John Deere Foundry, where he worked for 31 years, retiring in 1993. He was a member of the Geneseo Moose Lodge and St. Malachy Catholic Church. He was an avid Geneseo football fan, and enjoyed the White Sox, Green Bay Packers, gardening, and especially spending time with his family.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 49 years, Mary Ann; daughters, Tanya (Wade) Pettit, of Fox Island, Wash.; and Mindy (Mary Cantlin) Girten, of Grantham, N.H.; sons, Damian (Melissa) Girten, of DeForest, Wis.; and Bill (Tricia) Girten, of Geneseo; grandchildren, Zachary, Lucas and Nicholas Williams, of Eugene, Ore.; Connor, Bryson and Bennett Girten, of DeForest, Wis.; and Hunter, Anna Cate, Grace Lee and Caroline Page Girten, of Geneseo; brothers, Ray (Sally) Girten, of Geneseo; and Bob Girten, of Clinton Township, Mich.; and sisters, Dolores Nanninga, of Annawan; and Betty (Bob) Bennett, of Annawan. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Margaret; and his brother, Damian.
