AVON-The Angels in Action, the Relay For Life team in Avon, are working with Mrs. Kristi Anderson, Avon Campus Principal, and Mrs. Chelsea Logsdon, school social worker, to brighten Christmas for local students. Letters were sent home to parents, offering assistance in providing clothes and toys. Letters from 28 families, with 78 children, were returned to the school and the anonymous lists of the requested items have been given to the Angels. Each child is identified with an assigned number, and parents of children of elementary age and younger were able to request eight items for each child, including a shirt, pants, boots, shoes, socks, underwear, coat/jacket, and small toy. Parents of middle and high school students could request five items, including a shirt, pants, socks, underwear, and a coat. The Angels have created tags, which are on trees at Tompkins State Bank in Avon, the Avon United Methodist Church, the Avon Federated Church, and the St. Augustine Catholic Church. Each tag lists one requested item— so there may be eight tags per child— and the tag has the assigned number for that child. Community members may take as many tags as you wish—for example, you could buy shirts for three different children (by choosing three tags that list shirts) or three items for the same child (by choosing tags that have the same ID number). The Angels ask that the unwrapped gifts be returned (with the tag so we can match it up to the child) to one of the churches or to the bank, by Dec. 2. The Angels will take all the gifts to the school, who will handle the private distribution to the parents. In addition, cash donations will also be appreciated (and may be given to any member of the Angels in Action team, or at the Bank), and the Angels will do the shopping. The Angels in Action appreciate the support that the Avon community has always shown for their projects— this is our opportunity to help our local children have a wonderful Christmas. The need this year is the greatest in the ten years that the Angels in Action have organized the Avon Angel Tree. In 2018, gifts were requested—and supplied— to 44 children. This year there are 78 children for whom gifts are requested. Please help in any way you can. Any questions, please call or text Linda Fey Smith, team captain, at 309-368-5449. The Angels are very grateful for the community’s support.
