Pontiac baseball

    Coal City broke a tie game with a five-run fourth and went on to a 9-5 victory over Pontiac in a nonconference baseball game at The Ballpark at Williamson Field Wednesday afternoon.
    Pontiac had tied the game at 4-4 with a three-run third inning. Garrett Gould led off with a base hit and Jacob Duffy singled one out later. Tanner Walls then tripled with two outs to drive in both runs and cut the Coalers’ lead to 4-3. Walls scored when Andrew Lee reached on an error.
    Coal City got to Pontiac’s pitching in the fourth as the first seven batters reached base. The big hit was a triple with the bases loaded.
    Jakob Grieff singled and scored in the sixth for Pontiac’s final run.
    Walls had a triple for the Indians while Gould, Carter Dawson, Duffy and Grieff each singled. Eric Watson also singled and drove in a run.
    Dawson took the loss after going 3-plus innings. He allowed nine runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out two. Logan Verdun walked two, allowed one hit and fanned three in 3 2-3 innings. Liam Pickett finished up.
    JUNIOR VARSITY — Pontiac tried to rally late but fell short as Coal City won the junior varsity contest 15-11 at Coal City.
    The Indians fell behind 10-2 after three innings and trailed 14-4 after four. PTHS scored three runs in the fifth frame and four in the sixth but that was it.
    Payton Amm had a double, two singles, drove in a run and scored four times. Austin Waldschmidt doubled, singled and drove in a run and Evan Trevino had two hits and an RBI while Isaac Nollen also had two hits. Nic Hendren and Tre Edinger each had a double and RBI and Luke Fox and Kobe Fox had one hit apiece.
    Hendren took the loss after giving up five runs on four hits and three walks in two innings. He struck out three. Amm yielded nine runs in two innings and Kobe Fox finished up, allowing a run on four hits and a walk while striking out three.
    FRESHMEN — Pontiac’s freshmen had a rough go at Chillicothe as IVC posted a 10-1 victory. The Indians’ lone run was scored in the third inning.
    George Smith had three hits and Clayton Haase singled twice for PTHS. Ricky Matuszewski had a hit and scored the Tribe’s lone run and Kaden Thomas also singled.
